Book announcement
Dr. Christopher Centeno, who contributes content to our autologous stem cell section of the website, has written a book chapter on the use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in orthopedic injuries which is Chapter 21 in the new medical text, Stem Cells and Cancer Stem Cells, Volume 1 (Hayat, Springer 2011).
Abstract of chapter 21: "The Use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Orthopedics"
The use of mesenchymal stem cells in orthopedics has been postulated for many years, with robust animal data showing efficacy in cartilage healing, tendon repair, and intervertebral disc treatment. Early clinical data is also just starting to be published in primarily cartilage repair and these results are encouraging. The field of tissue engineering with stem cells in orthopedics has the potential to reduce morbidity and improve clinical outcomes.
